The James River Yarn Crawl at The Flying Needles

We cannot believe it’s HERE! The James River Crawl 2022 kicks off on Thursday, May 12, and starts Friday, May 13! 

Nine days of incredible yarn goodness! And if you don’t know, the James River Yarn Crawl is like a bar crawl only with YARN!

During these nine days, we will play host to five trunk shows and a special in-person weekend with Cottontail Farms and Gypsy Mountain. 

IN-PERSON COTTONTAIL FARMS

Cottontail Farms and Gypsy Mountain Farms will be on-site and in-person Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21, next door in Suite 12. 

TRUNK SHOWS

We’ve been working with Mitchell’s Creations for months prepping for her amazing Unicorns and beautiful New Orleans inspired yarns. Terra’s been working on a very special sample for us, too! We received this trunk show on Thursday May 12, and unfortunately, it will be on the website Monday, May 16. We can tell you she sent us absolutely stunning yarns in four bases:

Fountainbleau Sock & 
FountainBleau DK.

Should you be dying for some of her yarn, you are welcome to set up a virtual appointment by called us at 757-345-3655 between 10 am and 5 pm any day.  

MAB Elements sent us an EXCLUSIVE Magnetic Shawl Pins, Earrings and Stitch Markers! These beauties are NOT to be missed! She also sent a large assortment of other magnetic and regular shawl pins.

The other three trunk shows are on the website and will go live at 7 pm Thursday!

Love and Leche has sent us the mother of trunk shows with all of their Little Bees and Sweet Sheep hand balms, perfect for helping those dry hands recover and to stop yarn picks in their place! 

Purlsmith is sending us a show crammed full of gorgeous stitch markers. 

And lastly, Dolly Palmer Buttons is sending us a beeeeeeee-uuuuuuu-teeeeeeee-ful trunk show full of GLASS BUTTONS!

This doesn’t even include all the incredible special merchandise we will have on hand. We will release the full list of in-store Crawl promotionals the week of the Crawl kick-off.

EXCLUSIVES 

We have a whole slate of very special merchandise created for this event, all created with a Mermaid theme.

Cottontail Farms outdid themselves this year with the incredible bags she designed. The Leather Traveler is the jewel in the crown. This everyday, on-the-go or project bag has a TON of room on the inside with sexy leather details, including a leather bottom. 

She also created a draw-string project bag that matches the Leather Traveler. This sturdy bag is generous in size at 14" wide, 11.5" tall and 7" deep gusset. This beauty is finished off with a beautiful matching drawstring and a leather Cottontail Farms tag.

MAB Elements created Mermaid Magnetic Shawl Pins and matching earrings. We swooned when we opened the box! She also created a special mermaid stitch marker set.

Mitchell’s Creations delivered Sea Queens on both fingering and DK bases. Robin’s Promise delivered Visions of Sea Maidens on her Songbird Fingering and Two Sparrows DK. She also has delivered the color on a brand new base - Tough Little Birds, a 75% Bluefaced Leicester 25% nylon base. BFL is particularly prized by sock knitters as its a stronger yarn than merino wool. 

NEW MERCHANDISE

We will have brand new Lantern Moon needles and accessories, maker's boards from Cocoknits and a giant restock of Assigned Pooling yarns from Cozy Color Works and a giant restock from Berroco. We will have new kits daily along with brand new merchandise added to our Clearance section.

KICK-OFF PARTY!

The Crawl will start with a bang as all six shops will co-host a Kick-Off party at 7 pm Thursday, May 12. Each shop owner will walk you through highlights of what’s going on in each shop during the nine days.

IN-PERSON

For those participating in-person, pick up your James River Yarn Crawl Passport by making a purchase at The Flying Needles during these nine days. Once you make a purchase, we will then stamp your passport. Once you have received stamps from all six shops, you can turn in your filled passport at the last shop on your trail.  

ONLINE

For those participating virtually, make an online purchase at The Flying Needles and turn in a receipt of all your purchases in one email. Add the SUBJECT LINE: JRYC GRAND PRIZE, and email your grand prize submission to jamesriveryarncrawl@gmail.com.

PRIZES

We will have draw daily prize winners! Our sponsors have been extraordinarily generous this year, and we have enough prizes to pull a daily prize winner. Along with getting your passport stamped, make sure you get your raffle ticket to enter into that day’s drawing. 

We also are playing host to one of the grand prize baskets, nearly $750 in value! This beauty is sitting atop our needle cabinet behind the register. So, if you’re curious, be sure to take a look. There are TWO Grand Prize baskets this year, each of similar value. There is a third grand prize - a full ChiaGoo Red Lace Interchangeable needle set. All completed passports will qualify you for all of these prizes.

All completed passports will be entered into the Grand Prize Giveaway! Shop prizes also will be at stake – valued at more than $150 each. 

HOURS 

Just like all the shops, The Flying Needles will be open May 13-21 from 10 am to 5 pm, including Sunday, May 15, from 10 am to 5 pm. 

PARKING

There is a TON of parking at The Flying Needles. For buses or vans, please call us to let us know a large group will be coming to the store so we will be appropriately staffed for your excursion.

FOOD

There are many restaurants in Williamsburg Crossing, the location of The Flying Needles. There is Taco Bell, Subway, The Coffeehouse, Chopsticks, Papa John’s, Domino’s, Tops Chinese and Bruester’s Ice Cream.

OTHER

We will not be winding yarn during these 9 days of Crawl activity. Should you need your yarn wound, please take your purchases, and return with them beginning May 23. We will be more than happy to wind your yarn upon your return.
