Beginning Knitting

If you’ve wanted to learn how to knit, and you think you would try the patience of Job, just come on over for our beginner knitting class. Our 1-session class will teach you how to knit. You can BYON (bring your own needles) and BYOY (bring your own yarn) or purchase your materials at The Flying Needles for 10% off after you have registered. This class is held roughly every other Wednesday & Saturday morning from 11 am to 12 pm, and you can take as many sessions as you want! Each class is limited to 4 people. The Flying Needles Yarnistas de jour will be teaching these classes.

BEGINNER: Charmed Hat

Are you a beginner and want to tackle a new project? Charmed is a great hat for a beginner It is made with a bulky yarn and will knit up quickly and the result is a great hat to wear!!  This class taught by the Hat Queen & Yarnista Sam will be two 2-hour sessions from 10 am to 12 pm Saturday, March 14 and 28.

Class Level: Beginner
Skills required: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off, mastered tension
What you will learn: Brioche stitch
Materials: Size 13 needles, 85 yards super bulky yarn
Pattern: Charmed Hat , $5.64 electronic or $6.50 printed

INTERMEDIATE: All The Love Sweater

Need a little love in your life? Show yourself some with this gorgeous knitted sweater. This boxy pull-over sweater class led by Yarnista, Dyer & Owner Susan Dickerson should be at least your 2nd sweater you’ve successfully knit. All pattern proceeds from this beauty all go toward supporting a school for babies and infants. You can read more about the project here: https://www.jojiknits.com/help-argentine-kids

This top-down, seamless sweater is knitted with DK yarn, is a square with some short-row shaping to build up the back of the neck and has a small lace pattern on either side front and back. Sizing for this knitted gorgeousness goes all the way up to a 79” bust size with 20” positive ease! This 4-session class will be held from 1 to 3 pm Wednesdays, March 18, April 1, 15 & 29.

Class Level: Intermediate
Skills required: Must have successfully knit your first sweater
What you will learn: Top-down, seamless sweater construction, short-row shaping, how to read a lace chart, how to appropriately read a sweater pattern & get a sweater to fit your measurements
Homework: One week prior to class, knit a gauge swatch in your yarn and block swatch & bring in to confirm gauge, which should be 19 stitches and 28 rows to 4” (10cm) in Stockinette St on US 6 (4 mm) needles. Before you measure, please take the time to wash and block your swatch in the same manner that you will wash and block your sweater.
Materials: size 4 & 6 circular needles (or size needed to successfully get gauge), 1050-1725 yards of DK yarn, stitch markers, stitch holders, tapestry needle
Pattern: All The Love by Joji Locatelli, $6.50 electronic or $10 printed pattern
Cost: $150 with 24-hour advance reservation / $180 walk-in

**Notes: You will be writing on your pattern. Please bring a copy if you don’t want to mark your original. Have 1 or 2 skeins of your yarn wound prior to class if it comes in hanks. If you are uncertain of your size or the number of skeins you need, remember that wound yarn cannot be returned. Leave your last 1 or 2 hanks unwound, in case you have over bought.

**To successfully navigate this class, you will have homework between classes that will need to be completed. If you do not have time to complete the homework between classes, we suggest you wait to take the class when you have more time.


ALL LEVELS: Continental Knit & Purl

Your needles not FLYING fast enough for you? Do all those Fair Isle COLOR WORK projects call your name? Yarnista Cristi Nice will have your needles off & flying with Continental Knitting and the Norwegian Purl. This technique makes seed stitching & knit 1, purl 1 a BREEZE! This 1-session class will be held 3 to 5 pm Saturday, March 28

What You Will Learn: Knit continentally & purl
Materials: size 8 needle and worsted weight yarn

INTERMEDIATE: Toe-up Socks with Magic Loop or TWO NEEDLES

DPNs getting in your way? Come learn toe up socks (that you can try on as you knit!!!!!) and learn to do magic loop so you never have touch DPNs again! This 3-session class is taught by Yarnista Joan Minarik 1 to 3 pm Saturdays, March 21, April 11 & May 2.

Class Level: Intermediate (you must be a current & confident knitter)
Skills required: You must understand knitting and purling.
What you will learn: Judy’s magic loop cast on/ Turkish cast on, increases (M1L/ M1R or KFSB), knit socks via magic loop
Materials: Sock yarn & 40” circular needles in your choice of US size 0 to 2.
Pattern: Time Traveler Socks, FREE Ravelry download; however class can accommodate your preferred toe up pattern.
Cost: $90 with 24-hour advance reservation / $110 walk-in


INTERMEDIATE: Hogwarts Express Shawl

This crescent-shaped shawl uses a simple construction with no short rows, making it both quick and relaxing to work. But these super cute owls with their beaded eyes, make this shawl a to-die for knit! Navigate the cute cables and adding beading into your knitting! Yarnista, Dyer & Owner Susan Dickerson will help you through this super enjoyable knit 1 to 3 pm Wednesdays, June 10 & 24.*

Skills required: You must be able to cast on, knit & purl, and have consistent tension
What you will learn: Read a chart, increasing, how to add beads to your knitting and cabling
Materials: 430 yards or more of fingering weight yarn, US size 3 needles (or size to accomplish gauge), A LOT of stitch markers, 6/0 beads for owl’s eyes (not available at The Flying Needles), and a crochet hook that will fit through the beads

INTERMEDIATE: Girlfriend Market Bag

Knit this versatile market bag for a friend or yourself and keep this bag around for all purpose duty. It’s even WASHABLE! Taught by Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson 1 to 3 pm Wednesdays, June 17 & July 1. The finished size of this bag will depend upon your yarn and your needles.

Skills required: You must be able to cast on, knit, purl, bind off
What you will learn: How to use DPNs, knitting in the round, an easy lace pattern, kitchener stitch
Materials: 150g of Sport or Worsted weight yarn either one color or a Contrasting Color, either solid or striped, 5 DPN size 4, 5 or 6, 16” circular needles, 5, 6, 7, 8, 24” circular needles 10, 10.5 or 11 and a crochet hook G, H, I.
HOMEWORK: Complete the beginning 8 rounds of ribbing, as written in the pattern

SPINNING CLASSES

Drop Spindle Spinning

It’s been our most requested class, and IT’S FINALLY HERE! DROP SPINDLE SPINNING!!! Recently retired Lisa Draper is making her debut appearance at The Flying Needles this fall with this and a few other classes. This Spinning & Stranded Colorwork Queen will walk you through taking fiber and spinning it into your OWN yarn! Sign up early as we are serious about this being the most requested class! This 2-hour class will be held 10 am to 12 pm Saturday, May 9.

What You Will Learn: fiber preparation, fiber drafting, spinning
Materials: Drop spindle, 2 to 4 ounces of wool fiber, approximately 1 yard of scrap wool yarn
