Beginning Knitting

If you’ve wanted to learn how to knit, and you think you would try the patience of Job, just come on over for our beginner knitting class. Our 1-session class will teach you how to knit. You can BYON (bring your own needles) and BYOY (bring your own yarn) or purchase your materials at The Flying Needles for 10% off after you have registered. This class is held every other Wednesday & Saturday mornings from 11 am to 12 pm, and you can take as many sessions as you want! Each class is limited to 4 people.

The Knit Doctor!                                             Jan. 7, Monday

The Doctor is IN! Need help on a project that requires more than a quick ask of our staff? Then this is for YOU! Drop your project and your pattern off a week ahead of time, schedule your one hour class, and we will try to have you up and running! There are only FOUR slots available for the Knit Doctor’s hour, so book this early.  All skill levels are welcome, so bring in that scarf that has you stuck or that sweater you can’t quite figure out. This class is held from:

INTERMEDIATE: Brioche Stitch

Walk on the wild side and master the BRIOCHE stitch! Sometimes called fishermen’s rib, or a reversible stitch, this technique results in stretchy, squishy fabric and has ALL SORTS of uses including scarves, cowls, washcloths, hats, etc. This class will teach you the brioche stitch and get you started on a brioche coaster set! This class MUST BE TAKEN PRIOR TO THE TWO-COLOR BRIOCHE COWL.

BEGINNER’S SERIES: Basic Raglan Sweater
Jan. 9 & 23, March 13 & 27, Wednesdays (4-session class)

It’s SWEATA WEATHA! We know the snow, rain, ice & cold temps are going to inspire us to churn out sweaters like a sweatshop factory. We don’t want you to be left behind! So we went ultra basic for our Beginner’s Series Sweater: The Basic Raglan Sweater by Joji Locatelli. Knitters regularly turn to Joji for a pattern that they know they will finish and for GREAT GARMENTS!

This sweater will be simply crafted seamless, top-down and designed with minimal flourishes so the materials take center stage and sized with comfortable but streamlined ease. This 4-session class will be taught by Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson and will be held Wednesdays, Jan. 9 & 23, March 13 & 27.

Skills required: You must be able to cast on, knit & purl, and have completed a project in the round.
What you will learn: Importance of gauge, top-down sweater construction without seams, pattern reading, K2tog, kfb, ssk, using waste yarn to hold stitches, knit sleeves top down on magic loop, picking up stitches around a neck and under arms, binding off in pattern
Materials: 880-1750 yards of DK weight yarn, US 4 & 6 circular needles 32” long or more, stitch holders or waste yarn, stitch markers
HOMEWORK: Knit a 4” x 4” swatch (stockinette stitch – knit on right side & purl on wrong side) with your needles & yarn and confirm gauge prior to 1st class. If you need assistance, please make an appointment to confirm gauge.**

Cable Coaching        

Choose YOUR OWN Cable Sweater Adventure! Choose from one of three cabled sweaters – The Cassidy, The Plymouth Cabled Jacket OR the Reedsport and get COACHING! Our Cable Queen Janice Feld will coach you along in 5 sessions, and at the end, you will get that cabled sweater to warm yourself during the cold months. The 5-session class will be held 1 to 3 pm Thursday, Jan. 10, with 1-hour class follow-up every other week for 4 sessions from 1 to 2 pm, Thursdays, Jan. 24, Feb. 7 & 21 & March 7.

Gina’s Brioche Cowl                                 Jan. 11 & 25, Fridays
Feb. 4 & 25, Mondays                               March 13 & 27, Wednesdays

Gina’s Brioche Cowl is the perfect intro to a two-color brioche project. This wildly popular pattern will teach you this simple multi-color technique that creates a beautiful fabric mirrored on each side – the color play of Fair Isle or intarsia without the bother of tangled balls of yarn and pesky tails. And better still, brioche fabric is truly as squishy and luxurious as its namesake, the light and buttery brioche bun, making it just right for cozy cold weather accessories. You must have completed the BRIOCHE TECHNIQUE CLASS PRIOR TO THIS two-color brioche class.

Skills required: Completion of Brioche Stitch Class, Knit, purl, cast on & bind off, knitting in the round
What you will learn: Knitted cast on, two color brioche technique
Materials: Worsted weight yarn in colors that contrast & are not similar – 436 yards of main color, 328 yards of color 2, US size 6 with 40” or 47” cable, stitch marker, tapestry needle to weave in ends (Pattern calls for 9” of width. Shop sample is 7.5” wide and used 2 skeins of worsted weight yarn)
HOMEWORK: Cast on the pattern’s 218 stitches and knit the 5 rows (you can half this pattern with 110 stitches)

BEGINNER’S SERIES: Cabling                      Jan. 12 & 26, Saturdays

So you want to learn how to cable… We’ve got the class for YOU! Cable Coach Janice Feld will have you twisting and taming your yarn in no time flat with this beginner cabling class. Pick one of two scarves: Either The Flying Needles 1st Cabled Scarf (white) or The Flying Needles Cable Scarf (burgundy) and get started on that cabled scarf you’ve always dreamed of! This class will be held Saturdays 1 to 3 pm Jan. 12 and 1 to 2 pm Jan. 26.

Correcting Your Mistakes in Knitting       

Our most requested technique class is finally here and laser focused: You’re dropping stitches. You’ve missed a section of the pattern. You need a needle lifeline! You don’t know how to turn your stitches correctly when you have to unknit. You just found something wrong 14 rows back. No matter your skill level, EVERYONE can benefit from this class. Put the whammy on your mistakes! Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson will walk you through some of the most common knitting errors and how to fix them without ripping out your project or your hair! This class for beginners and intermediate knitters will help you!

Celtic Myths Shawl                           Jan. 14 & Feb. 4, Mondays

Celtic Myths Scarf is a half-circle shawl with a to-die-for Celtic cable border. This 70” x 19” shawl is worked top down and can be knit in either DK or Fingering Weight yarns. Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson is teaching this 2-session class offered 3 to 5 pm Mondays, Jan. 14 & Feb. 4.

BEGINNER’S SERIES: Baby Sweater

We want to encourage our beginning knitters! To do so, we’ve come up with our BEGINNER’S SERIES. This is the class for that beginner ready to try their hands at a sweater – just mini-sized! OR Do you want to learn the basics of making a sweater without all the sweat equity of a full-blown adult-sized sweater? Or do you have a cutie pie you just HAVE TO whip up a sweater for? If any of these scenarios are true, this IS THE CLASS FOR YOU! Learn the basics of a knitted top-down sweater construction with minimal seaming & a raglan sleeve – just FUN-sized. And good GLORY do we have some sweet yarns for the bambino in your life! There are multiple offerings for this 2-session class taught by Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson:

This short-rowing & asymmetrical sweater by Veera Valimaki was inspired by the art of breathing, something we rarely really pay attention to. This seamless sweater is worked from top down with raglan yoke and the asymmetric shaping makes it a very stylish and at the same time very easy to wear. We couldn’t resist this garment any longer! And just like the pattern designer, we don’t know what to call it other than an “envelope.” Not a shawl, not a shrug, not a poncho. Its construction is SUPER interesting and will go fast in this CHOOSE YOUR OWN KNITTING ADVENTURE with the offer of 5 sizes, 4 gauges and 2 stitch patterns. Snuggle up in this envelope and have that wardrobe piece that will most certainly be a conversation starter. ADVANCED: Recoleta Sweater

It’s SWEATA WEATHA! We know the snow, rain, ice & cold temps are going to inspire us to churn out sweaters like a sweatshop factory. We don’t want you to be left behind! Meet the Recoleta. A faux cabled/lace cardigan in luscious worsted. Named after a beautiful neighborhood in Joji Locatelli’s home city, the Recoleta is a shawl collar cardigan with raglan sleeve… But the feminine and interesting stitch pattern will keep you on your toes the whole time. As you make progress through the back, the lace grows diagonally together with the raglan shaping, creating the most delicate panel. The whole sweater is knit seamlessly, starting at the collar and knitting the rest from the top-down. The body is worked flat in one piece, and the sleeves are knitted in the round. Even though the pattern has written instructions that guide you through the whole process, the instructions for the Lace sections are CHARTED, which you will learn how to read in this 4-session class taught by Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson 1 to 3 pm on Thursdays, Jan. 24, Feb. 7 & 21, and March 7.

ADVANCED: Secret Garden Pi Shawl
Jan. 29, Feb. 19 & April 16, Tuesdays (3-sessions)

Combining a love for math and shawls, the Pi Shawl was born – a circular shawl worked from the center out using the pi construction method from Elizabeth Zimmerman. Increases at intervals using the “perfect ratio,” instead of increasing each row or every other row, creating a beautiful circular lace masterpiece. The pattern includes instructions for the transition between skeins of a gradient set, but can be knitted in any 1200 yards/300g set of fingering weight yarn. Fiber Junkie and Knit Ninja Taylor Yandell will guide you in this 3-session knitting adventure from 1 to 3 pm Tuesdays, Jan. 29, Feb. 19 & Apr. 16.
