Beginning Knitting

If you’ve wanted to learn how to knit, and you think you would try the patience of Job, just come on over for our beginner knitting class. Our 1-session class will teach you how to knit. You can BYON (bring your own needles) and BYOY (bring your own yarn) or purchase your materials at The Flying Needles for 10% off after you have registered. This class is held each Wednesday & Saturday morning at 11 a.m., and you can take as many sessions as you want! Each class is limited to 4 people. This class is usually taught by Owner Susan Dickerson but all The Flying Needles Yarnistas may make an appearance.

Let’s Get Back to Basics – Understanding yarn weights, gauge, & finding sub yarns for your pattern

You’ve got the perfect pattern, but the yarn it requires is discontinued and you don’t know where to start. Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson will lead this 1-session class about yarn weights, how to find a yarn to substitute in your pattern that will work and then how to measure that gauge to ensure the pattern will turn out correctly. This class will be held:

Basics of Blocking

You’ve knitted your shawl or scarf, and your project looks funny after you have bound off. You need to now BLOCK your final project! Those gorgeous knit stitches aren’t going to come out perfect. Once finished, you have to tell those stitches where and how to sit. Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson will lead this 1-session blocking basics held from 1 to 3 pm Wednesday, Oct. 18, OR 1 to 3 pm Tuesday, Nov. 28. Susan will run you through different yarns, how each performs with blocking and with samples of before and after blocked items. She will talk about steam blocking, spray blocking, how to block acrylic, use of lace wires & T-pins. The class will block one item during the class.

This first cabled scarf was designed by Yarnista Janice Feld with the intent to teach our beginners the basic cable (This class is a prerequisite to either the Cabled Jacket or the Cabled Shawl). This 2-session class will be held 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Saturday, Nov. 4 and then again 10:30 to 11:30 am Saturday, Nov. 18. The first session is two hours; the second is one-hour for troubleshooting.

Kathleen’s Spa Cloth Series – Happy Turkey Day

We’re naming this series after our beginning knitter Kathleen who gave us this idea. As a beginner, Kathleen wanted to practice her knits & purls, so she picked up a spa cloth pattern and whipped through it. In honor of beginner, who is now headed toward PRO status, we are holding a Spa Cloth series. Welcome to the Happy Turkey Day. This spa cloth is bumpy to help exfoliate the skin. Pair it with our Tasha’s Own Williamsburg soaps, and you have the perfect gift for birthday, or the Holidays!
