Beginning Knitting

If you’ve wanted to learn how to knit, and you think you would try the patience of Job, just come on over for our beginner knitting class. Our 1-session class will teach you how to knit. You can BYON (bring your own needles) and BYOY (bring your own yarn) or purchase your materials at The Flying Needles for 10% off after you have registered. This class is held roughly every other Wednesday & Saturday morning from 11 am to 12 pm, and you can take as many sessions as you want! Each class is limited to 4 people. The Flying Needles Yarnistas de jour will be teaching these classes.

ADVENTUROUS BEGINNER: The Williamsburg Cowl

Knitwear designer & Color Work Queen Tanis Gray stopped by The Flying Needles in July to launch The Williamsburg Hat & Cowl pattern. You guys know we continue to swoon over this pattern, right? Well, of COURSE, we’re going to teach it!

This cowl inspired by everything Williamsburg – the Colonial Williamsburg skyline, the sign of hospitality (the pineapple), the Governor’s Palace mosaic flooring – is just lovely. Recently retired Lisa Draper is making her debut appearance at The Flying Needles this fall with this and a few others. This Spinning & Stranded Colorwork Queen will teach this 2-session class from 10 am to 12 pm Tuesdays, Sept. 10 & 24.

Class Level: Adventurous Beginner
Skills Required: Casting on, knit, purl, consistent tension & knitting in the round
What You Will Learn: German Twisted cast on, corrugated ribbing, two-handed stranded color knitting, anchoring yarn floats
Materials: US size 7 24” circular needle (or needle size to get gauge); two contrasting colors of worsted weight yarn, approximately 250 yards each, two stitch markers, tapestry needle

Advanced Intermediate: Getting Your Knitted Sweater to Fit
Have you knitted a couple of sweaters and none of them fit properly? Then THIS CLASS IS FOR YOU! This class is ALL ABOUT the proper fit for your knitted garment and unleashing you to be the BOSS OF YOUR OWN KNITTING! Owner & Yarnista Susan Dickerson will walk you through how to ensure the fit of your knitted sweater, SLEEVES INCLUDED! She will teach this 1-session skills class from 1 to 3 pm Wednesdays:

Skills required: You have attempted at least 2 sweaters prior to class
What You Will Learn: How your own body’s measurements affect the pattern & size choice
Homework: Gather up lost cause sweaters and past sweater headaches

INTERMEDIATE: Brioche Stitch  

Walk on the wild side and master the BRIOCHE stitch! Sometimes called fishermen’s rib, or a reversible stitch, this technique results in stretchy, squishy fabric and has ALL SORTS of uses including scarves, cowls, washcloths, hats, etc. This class will teach you the brioche stitch and get you started on a brioche coaster set! This class MUST BE TAKEN PRIOR TO THE TWO-COLOR BRIOCHE COWL. Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson will lead you through this 1-session sexy knit held 3 to 5 pm Wednesday, Sept. 11.

What you will learn: Brioche stitch
Materials: Size 8 needles, worsted yarn in a natural fiber for coasters (cotton or wool)

INTERMEDIATE: Miss Grace Shawl

Back by popular demand, the Miss Grace Shawl created in a triangular shape in fingering weight yarn. This shawl will have you doing short rows like a Title Fighter creating a lovely color flow that will have you the talk at your dinner outing. This is a MUST HAVE for any fashionista’s wardrobe. Yarnista Joan Minarik will teach this short-row foray from 10 am to 12 pm on Wednesdays, Sept. 18, Oct. 2 & 30.

Class Level: Intermediate
Skills required: Knit, purl, knowledge of short rows helpful
What You Will Learn: German short rows, reading chart/pattern
Materials: Fingering weight yarn, 2 skeins of main color and 1 skein of two complimentary colors, US size 4 needles 32” & 60” circulars, tapestry needle.

ALL LEVELS: Finishing School

You’ve finished with the actual knitting, and now you must bind off & join seams. Don’t get stuck in Bind Off or Finishing Island. Come to Finishing School and put the WHAMMY on your #FinishedObject! Come learn a stretchy bind off, the Mattress Stitch, the Kitchener Stitch and the 3-needle Bind Off**. Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson will lead you through this class from 1 to 3 pm Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Skills required: You must be able to cast on, knit & purl
What You Will Learn: Mattress stitch, kitchener stitch,
Homework: Using a light-colored worsted weight yarn, cast on 25 stitches and knit in stockinette (knit one row; purl one row; repeat) and DO NOT CAST OFF! Leave stitches on the needles or on a stitch holder. Create a 2 more identical pieces and left on needles or stitch holders.
Materials: 3 homework items, enough needles in the same size to accommodate working with 2 pieces.
Cost: $40 with 24-hour advance reservation / $60 walk-in

**This class is two-hours in length and will go over as many skills as listed in the description as time allows between student learning and questions.


ADVANCED: Ginas Brioche Cowl

Gina’s Brioche Cowl is the perfect intro to a two-color brioche project. This wildly popular pattern will teach you this simple multi-color technique that creates a beautiful fabric mirrored on each side – the color play of Fair Isle or intarsia without the bother of tangled balls of yarn and pesky tails. And better still, brioche fabric is truly as squishy and luxurious as its namesake, the light and buttery brioche bun, making it just right for cozy cold weather accessories. You must have completed the BRIOCHE TECHNIQUE CLASS PRIOR TO THIS two-color brioche class. This 2-session class will be taught by Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson and will be held 3 to 5 pm Wednesday Sept. 18 & 25.

Class Level: Advanced Intermediate
Skills required: Completion of Brioche Stitch Class, knit, purl, cast on & bind off, knitting in the round
What You Will Learn: Knitted cast on, two color brioche technique
Materials: Worsted weight yarn in colors that contrast & are not similar – 436 yards of main color, 328 yards of color 2, US size 6 with 40” or 47” cable, stitch marker, tapestry needle to weave in ends (Pattern calls for 9” of width. Shop sample is 7.5” wide and used 2 skeins of worsted weight yarn)
HOMEWORK: Cast on the pattern’s 218 stitches and knit the 1st 5 rows (you can half this pattern with 110 stitches)

ALL LEVELS: Continental Knit & Purl

Your needles not FLYING fast enough for you? Do all those Fair Isle COLOR WORK projects call your name? Yarnista Cristi Nice will have your needles off & flying with Continental knitting and purling.  This technique makes seed stitching & knit 1, purl 1 a BREEZE! This 1-session class will be held 1 to 3 pm Saturday, Sept. 28.

BEGINNERS SERIES: Barley Hat

We want to encourage our beginning knitters! To do so, we’ve come up with our Beginner’s Series. This hat is a simple one to teach you knitting in the round with some jaunty garter texture on the side. This pattern calls for ARAN or WORSTED weight yarn, which means it’s going to go SUPER FAST! Yarnista Joan Minarik is teaching this two-session class 10 am to 12 pm Wednesdays, October 2 & 16.

INTERMEDIATE: Dandelion Mittens

Looking to expand your knitting horizons while checking a gift-giving box? These mittens, designed by Tanis Gray and a featured in the latest Nomadic Knits magazine, are the ANSWER! These stranded colorwork cozy mitts are knit in the round bottom up using multiple charts with a thumb gusset and traditional Norwegian style shaping. Recently retired Lisa Draper is making her debut appearance at The Flying Needles this fall with this and a few others. This Spinning & Stranded Colorwork Queen will teach this 2-session class from 10 am to 12 pm Tuesdays, Oct. 8 & 22.

INTERMEDIATE: Easy Bulky Sweater

Scared of sweater knitting? Can’t get your knitted sweaters to fit correctly? The Easy Bulky One is the PERFECT first sweater for those knitters who’ve always been afraid of making one and/or the traveling knitter, the knitter who needs a brain break or for the fashionista knitter. Whichever box you check, this sweater gives comfortable relaxed fit, ensuring that it will fit you even if you don’t hit gauge perfectly…

The sweater itself is a perfect square, no shaping for shoulders, no crazy short rows, just hours of simple, relaxing knitting. However, it has been carefully studied to fit female bodies and proportions to flatter, going all the way up to a 74” bust size with 16” positive ease! With fall coming and winter quickly on its heels, this is a great project for fashion and practice – to help you branch out from shawls and scarves. Beginner Tunisian Crochet

Bored with plain old knitting or crochet?  Want to spice up your fiber arting?  Tunisian Crochet is the union of knitting and crochet, and it will blow your mind what you can do with it. The Herringbone is a lovely stitch that adds interest and texture to your work. Crochet Queen Jo Emanuelson is offering TWO projects with this stitch providing you a wonderful introduction to the versatility of the stitch and a finished product that will have people asking, “Did you make that? It’s been our most requested class, and IT’S FINALLY HERE! DROP SPINDLE SPINNING!!! Recently retired Lisa Draper is making her debut appearance at The Flying Needles this fall with this and a few other classes. This Spinning & Stranded Colorwork Queen will walk you through taking fiber and spinning it into your OWN yarn! Sign up early as we are serious about this being the most requested class! This 2-hour class will be held 1 to 3 pm Saturday, Sept. 14.
