Beginning Knitting

If you’ve wanted to learn how to knit, and you think you would try the patience of Job, just come on over for our beginner knitting class. Our 1-session class will teach you how to knit. You can BYON (bring your own needles) and BYOY (bring your own yarn) or purchase your materials at The Flying Needles for 10% off after you have registered. This class is held each Wednesday & Saturday morning at 11 a.m., and you can take as many sessions as you want! Each class is limited to 4 people. These classes do fill up, so please register for this class by stopping by or calling us at (757) 345-3655.

This class is usually taught by Owner Susan Dickerson but all The Flying Needles Yarnistas may make an appearance.

Beginning Brioche

Walk on the wild side and master the BRIOCHE stitch! Sometimes called fishermen’s rib, or a reversible stitch, this technique results in stretchy, squooshy fabric and has ALL SORTS of uses including scarves, cowls, washcloths, hats, etc. This class will teach you the brioche stitch and get you started on a brioche coaster set!

This 1-session class is held multiple times:

Top-Down Beginning Sweater
Aug. 16 & 30, Sept. 13 & 27, Wednesday EVENINGS (4-session class)

START NOW AND HAVE A SWEATER BY THE HOLIDAYS!! And if the thought of knitting a sweater makes you break out in sweats, we assure you, this class will have you feeling like a PRO! A top-down, EASY beginner sweater class – no seaming, no stitching pieces in, it’s all KNITTING BABY! This simple Top Down Pullover with raglan sleeves by Diane Soucy is just GORGEOUS! And you can knit it with a roll neck or a ribbed neck. Sizes on this pattern range from a bust size of 34” to 54”. What you will learn: Importance of gauge, top-down sweater construction without seams, pattern reading, K2tog, ssk, using waste yarn to hold stitches, knit sleeves top down on magic loop, picking up stitches around a neck and under arms, binding off in pattern

**Notes for the Top-Down Beginning Sweater: You will be writing on your pattern. Please bring a copy if you don’t want to mark your original. Have 1 or 2 skeins of your yarn wound prior to class if it comes in hanks. If you are uncertain of your size or the number of skeins you need, remember that wound yarn cannot be returned. Leave your last 1 or 2 hanks unwound, in case you have over bought.


BEGINNING COLOR WORK: The Crosshatch Shawl (2-session class)

We’ve had requests for it, and now it’s here: BEGINNING COLOR WORK! This spunky Crosshatch Shawl uses 2 to 3 balls of yarn & you carry 2 colors throughout the project. Chevron Baby Blanket

Basics of Blocking
Aug. 23, Wednesday
You’ve knitted your shawl or scarf, and your project looks funny after you have bound off. You need to now BLOCK your final project! Those gorgeous knit stitches aren’t going to come out perfect. Once finished, you have to tell those stitches where and how to sit. Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson will lead this 1-session blocking basics held from 10:30 am to noon Wednesday, Aug. 23. Susan will run you through different yarns, how each performs with blocking and with samples of before and after blocked items. The class will block one item during the class.

The team at Churchmouse Yarns & Teas designed these one-skein slipper-socks for the 2009 LYS Tour. They make great gifts as they’re easy to fit and don’t take a lot of yarn. Spa Cloth Series – Snowbank by Allison Griffith

We’re naming this series after our beginning knitter Kathleen who gave us this idea. As a beginner, Kathleen wanted to practice her knits & purls, so she picked up a spa cloth pattern and whipped through it. In honor of Kathleen, who is now headed toward PRO status, we begin a Spa Cloth series. Welcome to the Snowbank. This spa cloth is bumpy to help exfoliate the skin. Pair it with our Tasha’s Own Williamsburg soaps, and you have the perfect gift for birthday, or the Holidays! Celtic Myths Scarf is a half-circle shawl with a to-die-for Celtic cable border. This 70” x 19” shawl is worked top down and can be knit in either DK or Fingering Weight yarns. GO MOEBIUS! The Mary Alice Cowl
Sept. 18 & 25, Mondays
Have you ever cast on to knit in the round and then find it twisted? Well TWIST IT UP ON PURPOSE with the Mary Alice Cowl. Grab 500 yards of your favorite DK yarn (we recommend for sure using Done Roving’s Gradient kits!) twist up the cast on by mastering the moebius cast on. Knit totally in the round with no seams. The pattern has fully written instructions with charts for the textured portions of the cowl. Beginner’s Baby Sweater (2-session class)

Do you want to learn the basics of making a sweater without all the sweat equity of a full-blown adult-sized sweater? Or do you have a cutie pie you just HAVE TO whip up a sweater for? If either is true, this is the perfect class for you! Learn the basics of a knitted top-down sweater construction with minimal seaming & a raglan sleeve – just mini-sized. And good GLORY do we have some sweet yarns for the bambino in your life! Top-Down Beginning Man’s Sweater (4-session class)
