Beginning Knitting

If you’ve wanted to learn how to knit, and you think you would try the patience of Job, just come on over for our beginner knitting class. Our 1-session class will teach you how to knit. You can BYON (bring your own needles) and BYOY (bring your own yarn) or purchase your materials at The Flying Needles for 10% off after you have registered. This class is held every other Wednesday & Saturday mornings from 11 am to 12 pm, and you can take as many sessions as you want! Each class is limited to 4 people.

This class is usually taught by Owner Susan Dickerson but all The Flying Needles Yarnistas may make an appearance.

INTERMEDIATE: Brioche Stitch

Walk on the wild side and master the BRIOCHE stitch! Sometimes called fishermen’s rib, or a reversible stitch, this technique results in stretchy, squishy fabric and has ALL SORTS of uses including scarves, cowls, washcloths, hats, etc. This class will teach you the brioche stitch and get you started on a brioche coaster set! This class MUST BE TAKEN PRIOR TO THE TWO-COLOR BRIOCHE COWL.

Grab your size 15 circs, a ball of super bulky yarn and cast on! In no time at all you’ll have a stylish accessory that you can either gift for the Holidays or quickly become YOUR go-to fabu accessory. BEGINNER’S SERIES: Baby Sweater
We want to encourage our beginning knitters! To do so, we’ve come up with our BEGINNER’S SERIES. This is the class for that beginner ready to try their hands at a sweater – just mini-sized! OR Do you want to learn the basics of making a sweater without all the sweat equity of a full-blown adult-sized sweater? Or do you have a cutie pie you just HAVE TO whip up a sweater for? If any of these scenarios are true, this IS THE CLASS FOR YOU! Learn the basics of a knitted top-down sweater construction with minimal seaming & a raglan sleeve – just FUN-sized. And good GLORY do we have some sweet yarns for the bambino in your life! There are multiple offerings for this 2-session class taught by Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson 1 to 3 pm Tuesdays, Nov. 6 & 20.

Skills required: Long tail cast on, knit, purl
What you will learn: KFB, YO, K2Tog, knitting in the round, basic sweater construction, joining yarns
Materials: 522 yards of DK yarn (we recommend any Dreambaby or Dreambaby Paintpot), US size 4 and 6 circular needles with 16” cables, US size 6 circular needle with 24” cable, stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving ends, knit gauge checker
HOMEWORK: Knit a 4” x 4” swatch (stockinette stitch – knit on right side & purl on wrong side) with your needles & yarn and confirm gauge prior to 1st class **

**Notes for the Beginning Baby Sweater: You will be writing on your pattern. Please bring a copy if you don’t want to mark your original. You will need to confirm your gauge prior to class. Please purchase your yarn in advance of the class and knit a 4” by 4” swatch (knit on the front, purl on the back) with the US 6 needles and bring to class. Use your gauge checker to confirm you are knitting at 5 ½ stitches per inch. If you need assistance with checking your gauge, please come by the shop.


Continental Knit & Norwegian Purl
Nov. 6, Tuesday

Your needles not FLYING fast enough for you? Do all those Fair Isle COLOR WORK projects call your name? Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson will have your needles off & flying with Continental Knitting and the Norwegian Purl. This technique makes seed stitching & knit 1, purl 1 a BREEZE! BEGINNER’S SERIES: The World’s Simplest Mittens

If you’ve always wanted to make a pair of mittens & were too intimidated by that fiddly thumbhole, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE! Turkish Bed Socks by Churchmouse Yarns & Teas

We’ve got GIFTS on our minds, and what a perfect gift for cold feet! The team at Churchmouse Yarns & Teas designed these one-skein slipper-socks for the 2009 LYS Tour. They make great gifts as they’re easy to fit and don’t take a lot of yarn. They’re nice for around the house and terrific for travel. What you will learn: How to read a pattern, a non-traditional method of sock construction, how to knit via the magic loop method with circular needles
Materials: 175 yards fingering weight yarn, size 3 double circular needles with at least a 32” cable, a highlighter, pencil and a tapestry needle for weaving ends

The Knit Doctor!
Nov. 10, Saturday
The Doctor is IN! Need help on a project that requires more than a quick ask of our staff? Then this is for YOU! Drop your project and your pattern off a week ahead of time, schedule your one hour class, and we will try to have you up and running! There are only FOUR slots available for the Knit Doctor’shour, so book this early. All skill levels are welcome, so bring in that scarf that has you stuck or that sweater you can’t quite figure out. This class is held from 11 am to 12 pm Saturday, Nov. 10.

Gina’s Brioche Cowl                                               
Nov. 10 & 17, Saturdays

Gina’s Brioche Cowl is the perfect intro to a two-color brioche project. This wildly popular pattern will teach you this simple multi-color technique that creates a beautiful fabric mirrored on each side – the color play of Fair Isle or intarsia without the bother of tangled balls of yarn and pesky tails. And better still, brioche fabric is truly as squishy and luxurious as its namesake, the light and buttery brioche bun, making it just right for cozy cold weather accessories. You must have completed the BRIOCHE TECHNIQUE CLASS PRIOR TO THIS two-color brioche class. This 2-session class will be taught by Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson and will be held: 1 to 3 pm, Saturdays, Nov. 10 & 17.

Skills required: Completion of Brioche Stitch Class, Knit, purl, cast on & bind off, knitting in the round
What you will learn: Knitted cast on, two color brioche technique
Materials: Worsted weight yarn in colors that contrast & are not similar – 436 yards of main color, 328 yards of color 2, US size 6 with 40” or 47” cable, stitch marker, tapestry needle to weave in ends (Pattern calls for 9” of width. Shop sample is 7.5” wide and used 2 skeins of worsted weight yarn)
HOMEWORK: Cast on the pattern’s 218 stitches and knit the 5 rows (you can half this pattern with 110 stitches)

BEGINNER’S SERIES: Beanie
Nov. 13 & 27, Tuesdays

We want to encourage our beginning knitters! To do so, we’ve come up with our Beginner’s Series. This hat is a simple one to teach you knitting in the round in a small area and decreases using magic loop. This pattern calls for ARAN weight yarn, which means it’s going to go SUPER FAST! This two-session class is taught by Yarnista & Owner Susan Dickerson and will be held 3 to 5 pm Tuesdays, Nov. 13 & 27.

So you want to learn how to cable… We’ve got the class for YOU! Cable Coach Janice Feld will have you twisting and taming your yarn in no time flat with this beginner cabling class. Pick one of two scarves:Either The Flying Needles 1st Cabled Scarf (white) or The Flying Needles Cable Scarf (burgundy) and get started on that cabled scarf you’ve always dreamed of! This class will be held Wednesdays 10 am to 12 pm Nov. 14 and 11 am to 12 pm Nov. 28.

Are you searching the souk for treasures? You’ll find one in On the Spice Market, an asymmetrical triangle shawl featuring a zesty mixture of color, textures, slipped stitches, and short rows. This 98.5” shawl size lets you style it a variety of ways—however you do, it will be a head-turner! The garter stitch stripes and contrast slipped stitch rows are perfect for showcasing a seven colors of Fingering Weight yarns. Holiday Garland – CROCHET

With the Holidays swiftly approaching, it’s home sprucing time mixed with a dash of last-minute gift needs. This cuuuuuute hand-made garland will serve you up as the blue-ribbon gift-giver. Learn several different crochet designs that can be strung together for a nifty decorative piece. Or the individual pieces can be used to add a little special touch to cookie tins, white elephant games and/or holiday cards.  This is also a great way to use up those little extra bits of yarn from the big holiday projects you’ve been working on. Treble Fantasy Shawl – CROCHET
It’s finally getting cold in Virginia and you need some extra layers to stay comfortable throughout the day – you NEED a shawl! This three-tiered crochet masterpiece is made using sock yarn, so it is light-weight enough for Southern winters while also being nice and cozy. In this class, you will learn how to work with an increasing repeat pattern and get very comfortable with the treble crochet stitch. Our Crochet Queen Jo Emanuelson will teach this 2-session class:
