A community looped together by yarn

It’s been four short months since The Flying Needles opened its doors on Oct. 15. It’s been a tremendous learning curve, but I’ve had a GREAT time (& my life is NEVER boring)! But somewhere along the way, something funny happened. It caught me by surprise, so it took me a little time to recognize and put a name to it.

People started coming in and then returning. Then they started catching up on the weather and each other. Beginners made friends in their classes. Relationships began to form. Open Stitch Nights turned into updates on projects and family members or problems.

I was about a solid month in when I realized that not only had I created a business, but within the space I had created a community was rising up!

In those four short months, just like any community, ALREADY we have grieved, we have celebrated, we have cried, we have laughed. We have shared compassion and reached out the hand of kindness and support – all because of our love for sticks and yarn!

When you have a dream, you only hope it turns out to be as great as what you imagine it to be. The Flying Needles has already surpassed my vision of it with the community that dwells there – crocheters, knitters, weavers, spinners, of all colors, shapes and sizes… much like the yarn that lives there.

If you haven’t been to one of the Open Stitch groups, consider yourself invited – Open Stitch Night every Wednesday from 5 to 7 pm, Open Stitch Group Thursdays from 10 am to noon, and Open Stitch Late Night from 7 to 9 pm the first Thursday of the month. We laugh, we cry, we knit, we crochet – all while, faces constantly ebb and flow. Come be a part of The Flying Needles community. If the lights are on, you are WELCOME!

What a lovely statement on your shop, customers and experiences! I am part of the Williamsburg Spinners and Weavers Guild and we enjoyed your visit. I live in Gloucester so I don’t get to town often. Yes I’ve been to your
” home away from home” once, however with those words I cannot wait to get back!
